Cristiano Ronaldo : Craving For Attention ?
Cristiano Ronaldo makes you sick, doesn’t he? He’s got the boyish good looks, he’s got the ridiculous talent, the guy just won two of the biggest trophies in club football with Manchester United and has 42 goals, the highest in his club, including 31 in the Premier League. Oh, and he’s dating a hot model who’s reportedly quite knowledgeable about sex.
Most men would be quite happy to live that dream, won’t they? Ronaldo, however, wants more.
Since hoisting the European Cup last week, Ronaldo has become the biggest transfer target in Europe. Spanish giants Real Madrid have made no secret of their interest in luring the Portuguese superstar away from Manchester, reportedly offering the Red Devils a £100 million transfer fee for him.
As expected, everyone at United is furious. The club is threatening to report Real Madrid to FIFA for tapping up Ronaldo and united’s assistant manager, Carlos Quieroz, even threw out some bizarre rants about the Spanish wanting to “naturalize” Ronaldo like they did with Christopher Columbus. Real president, Roman Calderon, is meanwhile playing down the rumors, saying this is merely an issue between a player and his club.
Seriously, here’s a guy who relishes being the center of attention, and he’s become the central figure in a tug of war between two of the most decorated football clubs in Europe. This story guarantees that he’ll be in the papers all summer, WHY would someone like Ronaldo want to end that? After all, he didn’t commit his future to Manchester United even after the Champions League glory. He probably enjoys sitting back and watching United and Madrid duke it out over him! That’s the ultimate ego stroke in this sport. What egomaniac, in his right mind, would stop that news cycle before it starts?
Ultimately, I think Ronaldo will remain at Old Trafford for now, because he is still attached to Sir Alex Ferguson, who plans to stick around for another three years or so. However, this is where the Webster Rule comes into play. According to that decision, Ronaldo could buy out his contract at the end of the 2009-2010 season for about £12 million and move anywhere he wants. Given that United lost £58 million last season in spite of their success on the pitch, maybe taking Real Madrid’s millions at the end of next season might not be such a bad idea!
And now to add to the saga, his mentor/counselor, Fernao Sousa, who counselled “young Ronaldo” to join Sporting Lisbon and then Manchester United, claims that Ronaldo has made up his mind and will be joining Real Madrid after Euro 2008.
Ronaldo, meanwhile, can end this whole saga any time he wants to. But why would he?
