Chelsea/Liverpool Held As The Gunners Fire 3 Against Newcastle

August 31st, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Chelsea have been held to a 1-1 draw by Tottenham who earned their first point of this PL season. Chelsea went into the lead after Belletti scored from a corner but Lampard’s mistake just before the HT helped Darren Bent equalise for Spurs. Elsewhere, Liverpool were also held to a goalless draw at Villa Park and Manchester City thrashed the Black Cats 3-0. SWP marked his return by scoring 2 out of the 3 goals.

Van Persie regained his form as Arsenal defeated Newcastle 3-0 yesterday. RVP scored 2 of the goals. The first goal was a penalty and the second was a result of beautiful football which is often displayed by Arsenal. However, the best goal of the match was the third one which involved flawless passing and can be termed as a typical ‘Arsenal goal’ and was scored by Denilson.

So can united grab this opportunity and draw level with Chelsea//Liverpool in terms of points?

Kenyon Believes Robinho Will Sign Before Monday ; Does Chelsea Even Need Him?!?

August 28th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Peter Kenyon has reaffirmed that Ronbinho will sign for Chelsea before Monday, i.e. before the closure of the August transfer window. Kenyon claims that Scolari had previously identified only two players, Deco and Robinho. Kenyon believes that Chelsea’s squad is ‘capable’ of competing in all competitions and Robinho’s transfer would be an added dimension.

The question that now comes to our mind is that how would Robinho manage to fit into an already star-studded squad? Where will he play in a team that has players like Ballack, Lampard, Joe Cole, Essien, Drogba, Anelka, Kalou and now even Deco. Yes, we did not even bother mentioning SWP or even Malouda for that matter!

Arsene Signs Man Utd Defender Silvestre

August 21st, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Veteran Manchester United defender Mikael Silvestre was signed last night by none other than Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger! This comes as a major shock as there hasn’t been a single transfer between Arsene Wenger and his Premier League rival Sir Alex Ferguson in the last 12 years they have been in opposition at the league.

Silvestre, who’s contract was about to expire next season is the first player to move from Man Utd to Arsenal since Brian Kidd, 34 years ago. Arsene has surprisingly handed him a two-year contract and will be paying him £50,000 a week and Arsenal reportedly payed £750,000 to United.

The two-year contract obvoiusly comes as a surprise as Arsene Wenger has known to be reluctant in handing out contracts for any longer than a year to 30 plus players including the likes of Robert Pires, Jens Lehmann and Dennis Bergkamp.

Arsenal will now have an experienced defender in their young squad and hope to take advantage of this. The Frenchman, known to have injury porblems has enjoyed considerable success at Old Trafford winning four Premier League titles, an FA Cup winner’s medal and a League Cup winner’s medal in his 361 appearances with the club.

JT Retains England Captaincy, Do You Agree With ‘Don Fabio’?

August 20th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Chelsea skipper John Terry has been named as the England Captain by boss Fabio Capello. Most pundits and bookmakers predicted Ferdinand to get the arm band ahead of the next international friendly against Czech Republic. Instead, it will be John Terry who gets to keep the band which he probably cherishes so much more than anyone else on the England squad. According to Mr. Terry, the ‘bravery’ and ‘character’ which he showed in the match against the United States, which took place just after Chelsea’s defeat in the UCL final, persuaded Capello to make him captain. While John Terry continues to tell the world about how proud he is of himself and his lovely captain’s band, a presumably disappointed Ferdinand has been given the vice-captaincy. Apparently, Terry was ’shocked’ and ’surprised’ when he was named captain. We wonder what Gerrard must be feeling?

We understand that John is a ‘brave’ footballer and one of the best leaders in the world, but is that what actually made him captain or was is just the lack of interest shown by the others? To be precise - What matters is not who becomes captain and who doesn’t but under who’s captaincy would England flourish the most?

You can feel free to come this way for all your opinions, rants, suggestions, etc.

Argentina Thrash Brazil To Enter Beijing ‘08 Final(Mens)

August 19th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

We acknowledge the fact that you don’t really care what’s on in football at Beijing this summer. We mean what credibility can a championship have, that lacks all the star players, all the top footballing nations in the top 15, has teams like Nigeria and Belgium - who have no standing whatsoever in the world of football fighting out for the top spots, has crowd pullers for Ronaldinho(whose in terrible form himself), Messi and Anderson to name a few and is played at a time when the BPL and other European leagues are about to begin? “Berbatov Pleads With Tottenham To Let Him Join United”

August 18th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

In accordance with certain reports, Tottenham are still reluctant to sell their star striker Dimitar Berbatov. However, the official website of Manchester United claim that he has pleaded with Tottenham to let him go. The Bulgarian had apparently slapped a transfer request on Friday. Tottenham are demanding a massive £30m for Berbatov whereas United will go no higher than £25m. Berbatov’s agent Emil Dantchev added: “We have two weeks until the end of the transfer window. I think this will be the most important week.”

So would the Bulgarian come to United or not?

Chelsea Thrash Pompey While Man Utd Are Held By Newcastle

August 17th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Chelsea: Joe Cole - 5′ / Anelka - 26′ / Lampard(P) - 44′ / Deco - 88′

Aston Villa: Carew - 47′ / Agbonlahor - 69′ 74′ 76′ | ManC: Elano - 64′ / Corluka - 89′

Manu: Fletcher - 24′ | Newcastle: Martins - 22′

Chelsea 4-0 Portsmouth

Luiz Scolari’s reign as Chelsea boss started in the best possible manner after his side sent a message to the others by comprehensively beating a poor looking Portsmouth side 4 goals to nil. Joe Cole opened the scoring and Anelka scored minutes later. Chelsea won a penalty just at the end of the first half and Lampard made no mistakes. A thunderous 30-yard strike from Deco made it 4-0 and served as the icing on the cake. Our MOTM award goes to Deco who not only adjusted fairly well with his new team mates, but also scored.

Aston Villa 4-2 Manchester City

Martin O’Niel’s Aston Villa kicks off their BPL campaign in style after defeating Manchester City 4-2. John Carew opened the scoring in the 47th minute when Ashley Young’s cross from the left wing was headed in by the former. City equalized in the 64th minute when Elano converted from the penalty spot. Gabriel Agbonlahor then brought Villa back into the driving seat by scoring three back-to-back goals. First he drilled the ball into the top-right corner of the net, then headed one in from a Gareth Barry cross and finally completed his hat-trick by striking the ball from his left foot, into the City net. Manchester City did get a consolation goal at the end of the game when Corluka’s right-footed effort from the centre of the penalty area found its way into the Villa net. A new season but a same old City! Mark Hughes’ side still has a lot more to do if they are to finish at a respectable position in the league table this year.

Manchester Utd 1-1 Newcastle

Manchester United start off their season with an unexpected draw with the Magpies. United were without Ronaldo, Tevez and Hargreaves and their absence was highly felt. United went down in the 22nd minute when Martins headed the ball into the United net. United equalized two minutes later through Fletcher. Man Utd had their chances both in the first and the second half but could not capitalize on any. With rivals Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal, all starting off with victories, how much would this draw affect the Champions in the long run!

Arsenal/Liverpool Win ; Spurs Disappoint

August 16th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Arsenal 1-0 WBA

(Ars: Nasri-4′)

Middlesbrough 2-1 Tottenham

(Boro:Wheater-71′/Mido-86′ Tot: Robert Huth (og) - 90′)

Everton 2-3 Blackburn

West Ham Utd 2-1 Wigan Athletic

(W ham: Ashton-4′,9′ Wig: Zaki-47′)

Liverpool 1-0 Sunderland

(Liv: Torres-83′)

Arsenal managed a positive start to the new Premier League season. The Gunners have won 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium after Samir Nasri’s 4th minute goal. West Bromwich couldn’t find the equalizer and the rest of the match was controlled by Arsene Wenger’s side, but no more goals were scored.

Tottenham, who are considered to be the only threat to the Big Four, disappointed by going down to Boro 2 goals to 1 at the Riverside Stadium.Defender David Wheater broke the deadlock for Middlesbrough in the 71st minute after an Afonso Alves shot had come back off the underside of the crossbar. Substitute Mido, an ex-Spur player scored with just four minutes to go. A late Robert Huth own goal came as a consolation for Tottenham Hotspur.

At Goodison Park, Everton went down 2-3 to the Rovers. It was an exciting contest with both teams locked at 2-2 until injury time when Ooijer netted the ball for Blackburn and stole the victory leaving the Everton team stunned.

At Kingston Comms Stadium, newly promoted team Hull City, playing thier first ever BPL fixture secured all 3 points against Fulham winning the match 2-1.

West Ham United, playing their season opener at home had a sincilating start with two goals in the first 10 minutes. A struggling Wigan then pulled one back two minutes after the break through Egyptian Amr Zaki and gave enough scare to the Hammers who had to struggle to hold on to their lead after losing Ashton and Parker in the second half.

Liverpool played the last match of the day and once again have to thank Torres for their victory. A dramatic 25-yard strike by the Spanish Superstar helped Liverpool win their opening BPL match. Steven Gerrard and Sami Hyypia were recalled for Liverpool whereas Sunderland were without injured striker Kenwyn Jones.

BPL Season Kicks Off Today ; Whom Are You Supporting?

August 16th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

So this is it, the wait is over. No more will the grounds remain empty, finally the Premier League season is Back and ready to kick-start today eliminating the boredom from our lives! So who are you bloggers supporting for the 2008-09 season? Before commenting, you can feel free to read our 2008-09 BPL season review!

Arsenal have a decent squad this year. But the question still remains the same, the squad is decent, but is it good enough? They lack experience, they lack quality in certain fields and one of the only things they have is Arsene Wenger. Last year The Gunners just fell short by some points and till mid-season, it appeared as if they were going to win it all. With the departure of players like Thierry Henry, Patrick Viera, Pires and now Flamini, Arsenal’s Title challenge is being seriously Questioned! This time last year many Arsenal fans feared Arsène Wenger had committed a terrible error by letting go off Thierry Henry. They were wrong. That didn’t stop the Gunners from fretting last summer. So can the Gunners do it all again this year?!?

With the Red Devils winning an enthralling title chase last season, they are just one title short of Liverpool. But Sir Alex Ferguson is not interested about all that and is only concentrating on building his squad stronger. With Ronaldo’s future now settled and Garry Neville back to complete fitness, United still want Tottenham star Berbatov. Back-to-back Premier League titles, champions of Europe, but still there’s an air of work-in-progress about them. Perhaps part of the appeal of Alex Ferguson’s current squad is this sense of obvious strengths making up for less obvious but still significant weaknesses. So how would the Red Devils play this season?

Chelsea are as usual one of the favourites to win the title this season. Chelsea did well last season under the average Avram Grant, after the departure of the Special One. They lost both the title and the Champions league final at the Final hurdle. But now the blues have a new world-cup winning manager who might not think he’s all that special, but Chelsea fans are confident that life under Luiz Felipe Scolari will be upto their expectations. They have brought in Bosingwa and Deco to strengthen their star-studded squad. He might not think he’s all that special, but Chelsea fans are confident that life under Luiz Felipe Scolari will be more than just so-so. Last season the Blues came within two points of the title and one shanked penalty of winning the Champions League with a manager whose methods were “25 years behind the times”. So how will Chelsea fare under the guidance of Scolari in a season in which even the second place would not be accepted by anyone?

Liverpool, on the other hand, will hopefully be better in league play, thanks to Robbie Keane’s new partnership with Fernando Torres. This is hopefully the year they finally end the league title drought. Although certain pundits claim that Liverpool are not deep enough, we believe that they have as much of a chance to win the title as Chelsea or Manchester United. They have brought many new players this season and Riise has finally been sold! So would Liverpool win any silverware this season or would history repeat itself?

Tottenham this season are expected to look for Chapions League Glory. We have to keep an eye on the Gunners-Spurs rivalry this year. We, liked what Juande Ramos is doing with Tottenham, and he’s got the best shot at finally breaking through the Big Four’s stranglehold on the Champions League. Unfortunately, it’ll only happen if injuries thin out Arsenal’s squad over the long term or if Cesc Fabregas struggles to find good form or just gets injured! Spurs have a quality squad and the introduction of Gomes, Dos Santos, Luka Modric and Bentley has just made it better. The departure of Robbie Keane would hurt them but that of Robinson would be helpful. Tottenham should try their best to not sell Berbatov since he is a genuine goal scorer and they need him if they want to stand any chance of breaking into the so called ‘Top Four’. So would they succeed?

India Wins AFC Cup / Do you even care?!?

August 15th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

India are winners of the AFC challenge cup (Hyderabad/Delhi) after defeating Tajikistan 4 goals to 1. The victory helped us achieve direct qualification into the Asia Cup, Qatar, which is scheduled to be held in 2011. Bhaichung Bhutia was declared the most valuable player of the Tournament and India also received a fair play award.

We are proud of our country’s achievement but would also like to question our readers that for how long would we be content with AFC trophies and ‘fair play’ awards?

The reasons for our bad performance at the International level, that matters, are countless! To start with, complete lack of encouragement/interest from the government’s side and lack of infrastructure available to us are two major drawbacks. We should also not discard the influence of cricket on our country. While the latter cannot be helped, the first two definitely can.

We need good grounds, we need more money being put into the game, we NEED football schools where the young could train themselves. We need to understand the fact that the future of our football lies in the hands of the young generation which has the potential, the desire and the passion to play the game, but not the much required resources.

Lampard Signs Five Year Deal

August 13th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Frank Lampard has today (13th August, 2008) signed a five year deal with Chelsea Football Club. This new deal would keep Lampard with the Blues till 2013-2014.

This deal has almost confirmed the fact that Lampard would end his career at Chelsea.
The one thing that comes to our mind now is that with players like Ballack, Deco, Essien, Joe Cole, Malouda, Mikel and Lampard all in the same team, who would start the match for Chelsea and who would be a bench warmer?

United Wins The Community Shield 3-1 On Penalties

August 10th, 2008 by The Editor, EF24/7

Man U - Tevez / Giggs / Carrick

Portsmouth - Defoe

Current Premier league and European Champions, Manchester United, have defeated Portsmouth 3-1 in the penalty shoot-out of the community shield after the match finished 0-0.

United looked the much better team in the first-half of the match and dominated Portsmouth. Nani played some decent football and the best chance of the first half fell to Fletcher. Nani’s lay-off gave Fletcher a chance to put United in the lead, but the Scot some how managed to miss the target. In the Second half also United had some clear-cut chance but could not convert any. Carlos Tevez was declared Man of the Match, but the absence of Roony/Ronaldo was felt.
