Doyle hoping for one last chance

Striker Kevin Doyle is confident his form for the Colorado Rapids in the MLS will put him in contention for Martin O’Neill’s Republic of Ireland squad for Euro 2016.

The former Reading and Wolves striker moved to Colorado in 2015 and he has since scored five goals in 20 games.

The 32-year-old is currently plying his trade in the MLS alongside fellow Ireland internationals Robbie Keane and Sean St Ledger.

Shane Long, Jonathan Walters and Daryl Murphy are the other striking options for O’Neill to consider for France this summer, but Doyle is hopeful he will make the final cut.

Doyle has made 61 appearances for his country and believes he can force his way into the squad in the next few months.

He told the Telegraph: “I’m 32 so it probably won’t come round again so it would be fantastic to be selected.

“It all depends on how I play. If I start the season well I’ve probably got two months to be in good form and show what I can do. I’ve been around the squad for 10-11 years so I’ve just got to play well and see if I can get picked.

“I’ve probably got a 50-50 chance of going. It’s up to me. I’d love to go – the last Euros ended too quickly and I’d like to go to this one and experience it and get through the group stages.”

If Doyle is picked he will be hoping to play his part in Ireland’s tough Group E campaign. They are currently 2.38 to qualify but they face Sweden, Belgium and Italy in the first phase.
