Payet not expecting French reprieve for Euro 2016

Dimitri Payet admits he would ‘give anything’ to represent France at Euro 2016 but he is not expecting a recall from manager Didier Deschamps.

The West Ham midfielder has been enjoying a sensational first season in the England’s Premier League but he has not appeared for Les Blues since winning his 15th cap in a friendly with Belgium in June last year.

Payet has netted eight Premier League goals this season as the Hammers continue to mount a challenge for a top-four finish and Champions League football for next season.

He was the hero at Goodison Park over the weekend as West Ham battled back from 2-0 down to defeat Everton 3-2, the 28-year-old netting the crucial winning goal in stoppage time.

Payet has not given up on his dream to represent France on home soil this summer but he admits he is not confident it will happen.

Despite that, he says he has no ill-will towards Deschamps for not selecting him.

“[It’s] not as an injustice,” Payet told Canal Plus. “The coach has to make choices. This is the boss, he selects the players he needs. I’m happy in my shoes, I try to be efficient.

“I will not say I’m happy to be replaced, I like to play and fight for my place.”

Payet feels he is playing the best football of his career since making the move to West Ham. He would be overjoyed to get the call from Deschamps but if it does not come, he says he can do nothing more about it.

“In sporting terms, I am in one of the best periods of my career. If I’m at the Euro that is fine, if I am not there, I know I would have given anything and there will be no regrets,” he added.

West Ham are 8.00 to finish in the Premier League’s top four this season.
