Payet relaxed over France chances

West Ham star Dimitri Payet remains guarded over his chances of earning a place in the France Euro 2016 squad.

Payet has been in sensational form for the Hammers since his summer switch from Marseille with eight goals and seven assists in the Premier League, despite missing most of November and all of December through injury.

The forward has been overlooked by France since June of last year however, and boss Didier Deschamps has previously stated he feels Payet performs better at club level than he does internationally.

It remains to be seen as to whether Deschamps will soften his stance ahead of Euro 2016, but Payet refused to criticise the manager and remains hopeful he can secure a Les Bleus recall.

“[It’s] not as an injustice,” Payet told Canal Plus. “The coach has to make choices. This is the boss, he selects the players he needs. I’m happy in my shoes, I try to be efficient.

“I will not say I’m happy to be replaced, I like to play and fight for my place.

“In sporting terms, I am in one of the best periods of my career. If I’m at the Euro that is fine, if I am not there, I know I would have given anything and there will be no regrets.”

France have friendly games against the Netherlands and Russia later this month and if Payet is not selected it seems highly unlikely he will be called on for Euro 2016 in his homeland this summer.

West Ham travel to Manchester United in the FA Cup this weekend and they are 4.00 to come out on top, while France are 4.00 to win Euro
2016 outright.
